International Mother Language Day!
UNESCOΒ π recently celebrated International Mother Language Day. The day is meant to celebrate linguistic diversity π©βπ§ and preservation. The theme of this year’s event was the role education π can play in fostering multilingual communities and encouraging the use of native tongues. Unfortunately 40% of learners today do not have access to education in the language they understand! Educators and government entities across the world need to come up with a way to fund and enable multilingual education. We atΒ Linguistics Justice LeagueΒ strive to provide multilingual content to language learns and support UNESCO’s efforts.
The Linguistics Justice League has exciting updates this month! Reveal and Natalya are hard at work gathering statistics for the website and brainstorming ways to improve accessibility. This includes exploring Aaron’s new page featuring videos on speaking and phonetics. By implementing these updates, the organization hopes to better serve its community and reach a wider audience. The Linguistics Justice League is committed to promoting linguistic justice and empowering marginalized communities through language education and advocacy. Stay tuned for more updates as the organization continues to evolve and grow.

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Jovani, a dedicated React Native developer who has been making significant contributions over the past month. Jovani's hard work and expertise have been instrumental in ensuring that his team's project is on track and ready for the next phase. Jovani has been working diligently on UI and Redux integration, and his efforts have paid off. With the UI now functioning smoothly and Redux incorporated into the code, the team can now focus on other aspects of the project. Jovani's decision to use Redux was a smart one, as it is a more established and widely used technology with a large community behind it. His careful consideration of the potential issues that could arise with the use of Jotai was important. Jovani is also currently working on integrating Jotai and APIs to expand the functionality of the app. Although the only screen that is currently operational is the login screen, Jovani's work has been foundational in setting up the structure for future development. He has also restructured the authentication process to optimize its performance and reliability. Jovani's contributions to the project are invaluable. Thank you, Jovani, for your incredible work!
ChatGPT and Language Learning
Dr. Ali Farghaly
ChatGPT is an advanced artificial intelligence chatbot that has the capability of interacting with users and engaging with them in meaningful conversational dialogues. While most traditional search engines work well for basic navigational and information requests, they struggle with complex queries and fall short of interacting with users by explaining their responses or asking users for clarifications when they need them. Search engines do not know when they go wrong and thus cannot recognize nor admit their mistakes. In contrast, ChatGPT knows and acknowledges its mistakes and shortcomings. Furthermore, it can ask for clarifications when it needs more information to respond to a question. It can also reject inappropriate requests and explain why it is running short of expectations. ChatGPT can respond to follow up questions on a previous request. ChatGPT is also capable of learning from its interactions with users. It can remember conversations and use them to improve its responses in the future. It can also use natural language processing to understand the context of conversations and responds accordingly. This means that ChatGPT can become more intelligent over time which is a human characteristic, as it learns from its interactions with users. Additionally, ChatGPT can be used to provide personalized recommendations to users based on their past conversations. In short ChatGPT is more human-like than any search engine we have today.

Students learning a foreign or a second language can find ChatGPT very useful as they can make use of the range of benefits it offers. Even native language speakers can also find it very fruitful. ChatGPT provides an interactive platform for students to practice their skills around the clock. The following are some of the ways students can use ChatGPT in their journey to master the language they are studying:Β
1. ChatGPT is powered by artificial intelligence and as such can understand and respond to studentsβ input in their target language.Β
2. ChatGPT provides students with feedback on their language proficiency, allowing them to track their progress and identify areas for improvement.Β
3. Students can ask and get help with all aspects of language. For example, they can ask ChatGPT to explain grammatical points they are struggling with. They can also ask for several example sentences illustrating usage of a grammatical structure. ChatGPT can also help with improving vocabulary learning. It can provide definitions of words students do not know and their translations in the studentβs native language. It can also show words in context by providing countless examples of actual usage.Β
4. ChatGPT can provide students practice exercises and can engage in meaning conversations with students.
Many educators feel that ChatGPT can be misused by students, as students could be too dependent on it. Too much dependence on ChatGPT can kill students independent and creative thinking. Another problem is that students can rely on ChatGPT to generate content that they falsely attribute to themselves. Thus, they fall into copyright infringement and plagiarism. A third problem is that students could misuse data that they had collected from ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is a great artificial intelligence application with very powerful natural language capabilities that is going to empower younger generations around the world. With all its amazing benefits, if misused, it can have a serious drawback on the minds of younger generations.
