This Project Aims to Preserve Unique Spanish Dialect in Northern New Mexico

The Legacy Project, led by Zackary Quintero of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, is working to preserve a unique Spanish dialect found in Northern New Mexico that is at risk of extinction within 18 and a half years. They are seeking community contributions, such as historical documents, to demonstrate the dialect’s historical use. Recently, they obtained a document from the 1800s that will aid their preservation efforts. The project involves three stages: gathering examples and conducting family interviews, conducting research, and publishing findings for public access at the NHCC, with the first public presentation planned for next year.
