Girlvolution

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) recently participated in the Girlvolution event, organized by Powerful Voices in Seattle. LJL team members conducted a language survey at the event, gathering important data on language diversity in King County, Washington. This data shed light on the multicultural communities and linguistic richness within the state.

The event provided LJL with the opportunity to establish connections and collaborate with various organizations dedicated to social justice and inclusivity. Noteworthy organizations like Communities of Rooted Brilliance, The Vera Project, and Young Women Empowered were present, showcasing their impactful initiatives. LJL was deeply inspired by the commitment demonstrated by these organizations towards social justice and inclusivity.

Speech Wizard

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) developed “Speech Wizard”, a guide specifically designed for Spanish language speakers. Curriculum focuses on introducing Spanish speakers to English sounds by drawing connections between the two languages.

Speech Wizard is organized into 4 sections, addressing both familiar and unfamiliar consonants as well as vowels. This enables learners to compare and contrast the usage of sounds in each language.

Unveiling the Linguistic Heroes Fighting for Endangered Languages

Smithsonian Magazine

Linguistics Justice League is interested in sharing this post from Smithsonian Magazine because it highlights an important issue in the field of linguistics – the preservation of endangered languages. The story of Alejandra Dubcovsky and Aaron Broadwell shows how important it is to not only learn and document endangered languages but also to challenge existing assumptions and stereotypes about these languages. Many Indigenous languages in the Americas and around the world are at risk of being lost forever, due to various factors such as colonization, forced assimilation, and modernization. Linguistics Justice League is dedicated to using language technology to help preserve these endangered languages and promote language learning LJL would like to share this story to help raise awareness of the importance of preserving endangered languages and promote the use of language technology to support this goal. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and valuing diverse languages and cultures, and of the power of collaboration between different fields to achieve common goals.
