LJL's Collaborative Milestones in Education, Advocacy, and Speech Technology

We have some exciting updates this month! LJL has collaborated with three organizations across the globe, ranging from building learning management platforms to advocating for language at Girlvolution

May Newsletter cover image

Girlvolution

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) recently participated in the Girlvolution event, organized by Powerful Voices in Seattle. LJL team members conducted a language survey at the event, gathering important data on language diversity in King County, Washington. This data shed light on the multicultural communities and linguistic richness within the state.

The event provided LJL with the opportunity to establish connections and collaborate with various organizations dedicated to social justice and inclusivity. Noteworthy organizations like Communities of Rooted Brilliance, The Vera Project, and Young Women Empowered were present, showcasing their impactful initiatives. LJL was deeply inspired by the commitment demonstrated by these organizations towards social justice and inclusivity.

Speech Wizard

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) developed “Speech Wizard”, a guide specifically designed for Spanish language speakers. Curriculum focuses on introducing Spanish speakers to English sounds by drawing connections between the two languages.

Speech Wizard is organized into 4 sections, addressing both familiar and unfamiliar consonants as well as vowels. This enables learners to compare and contrast the usage of sounds in each language.

LJL'S CUSTOMIZED LMS FOR ESL ORGANIZATIONS

LJL is excited to introduce our latest initiative: the development of a cutting-edge Learning Management System (LMS) specifically designed to empower non-English speakers on their language-learning journey. LJL's customized LMS is dedicated to providing a seamless and engaging online learning experience for ESL organizations. Our goal is to equip language learners with the tools they need to confidently learn and master the English language. Are you ready to take your language learning to the next level? Reach out to us today to learn more about our customized LMS and how it can transform your language learning programs.

Unveiling the Linguistic Heroes Fighting for Endangered Languages

Smithsonian Magazine

Linguistics Justice League is interested in sharing this post from Smithsonian Magazine because it highlights an important issue in the field of linguistics – the preservation of endangered languages. The story of Alejandra Dubcovsky and Aaron Broadwell shows how important it is to not only learn and document endangered languages but also to challenge existing assumptions and stereotypes about these languages. Many Indigenous languages in the Americas and around the world are at risk of being lost forever, due to various factors such as colonization, forced assimilation, and modernization. Linguistics Justice League is dedicated to using language technology to help preserve these endangered languages and promote language learning LJL would like to share this story to help raise awareness of the importance of preserving endangered languages and promote the use of language technology to support this goal. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and valuing diverse languages and cultures, and of the power of collaboration between different fields to achieve common goals.

Richard Choi

LJL family continues to grow! Welcome to the LJL family, Richard Choi, Aashita Krupadanam and Anushka Agarwal!

We look forward to achieving great things together. We are grateful of these new volunteers and their commitment to making a positive impact on language education and preservation.

Together, we will continue to empower individuals worldwide through language and work towards a more inclusive linguistic landscape.

OneWorldNow - Give Big Campaign

SPEAKING UP FOR LINGUISTIC JUSTICE

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) at Girlvolution in Seattle recently conducted a language survey and found an incredible range of languages spoken by youth in King County, Washington.

Do you know how many languages are spoken in your community?

Have you ever considered the barriers that language can create in accessing information or services? Linguistics Justice League at Girlvolution in Seattle discovered the incredible range of languages spoken by youth in King County, Washington, from Oromo to Somali to Spanish to Arabic and beyond. This linguistic diversity is a reflection of the multicultural communities that make up Washington State.

The Urgent Need for Policies and Cultural Change to Ensure Linguistic Equity

However, the lack of reading material and accurate translation methods for low-resource languages creates a significant challenge. The solution is in policies and cultural change. Establishing policies that enable multilingual support and allocating budget for language initiatives can help ensure that everyone has access to the information they need, regardless of the language they speak.

Language to Empower Communities

The power of language is incredible, and it is essential to use it to empower and include everyone. LJL aims to be an example of the potential of language to unite communities and create positive change.

LJL Met Inspiring Social Justice Activists and organizations in Seattle

LJL also had the opportunity to meet and interact with several organizations dedicated to social justice and inclusivity, such as Communities of Rooted Brilliance, The Vera Project, and Young Women Empowered. These organizations are doing important work in their communities, and LJL was inspired by their dedication to social justice and inclusivity.

How Linguistic Justice Empowers Communities and Promotes Inclusivity

Linguistic justice is about recognizing the power of language and ensuring that it is used to empower and include everyone, regardless of their cultural background or linguistic abilities. We should all strive to learn about the different languages spoken in our communities and support policies that promote linguistic diversity and inclusivity.

Language Survey

As of 2018, 1 in 7 WA residents is an immigrant and another 1 in 7 WA residents is a native-born US Citizen with at least one immigrant parent
12% of WA state students participate in the English Language Learning program.
6 different languages identified in the survey with Oromo being the most prevalent

Unleashing Potential and Embracing Diversity
LJL's April Achievements

April has been a busy and exciting month for LJL, as they achieved some significant accomplishments that are worth celebrating. From participating in the NYLC conference to launching new features and translations on their Edulang platform, LJL has been making strides towards their goal of promoting language learning and cultural exchange. Let’s take a closer look at some of their achievements.

National Leadership Youth Council Conference

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) made waves at the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) for Service-Learning Excellence Award conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where they were one of just five teams selected to attend with a full scholarship. Subha Vadlamannati, the founder of LJL, and Eshaan BarkatakiEduLang (a LJL product) co-chief technologist, presented their innovative project, EduLang, to an enthusiastic audience of government officials, organizational leaders, and strategic partners.

Edulang App Unveils New Translation Feature for a Seamless Learning Experience

Edulang app, is currently undergoing improvements to enhance its users’ learning experience. One of the significant upgrades being implemented is the updating of its translation system.

The translation system will provide line by line translations, which will prove to be an invaluable tool for readers. This feature will help learners to better understand the text they are reading and will significantly aid in their language acquisition.
This new feature will also allow learners to see the translations of individual words by simply hovering over them. This function will prove to be very helpful for learners who are just starting to learn a new language and are not yet familiar with the vocabulary.
The line by line translation system will allow learners to view translations for specific phrases and sentences as they read. This means that they will no longer have to switch between reading and translating, thus saving them time and making their learning experience more seamless.
The improvements being made to the Edulang app's translation system will significantly enhance the learning experience for language learners. The line by line translation system will provide learners with a more efficient and effective way of learning, ultimately leading to improved language acquisition.

ARE WE IGNORING 3 BILLION VOICES?

Have you watched our founder, Subha Vadlamannati’s recent TEDx talk on “Are We Ignoring 3 Billion Voices?” If not, you’re missing out on an insightful and thought-provoking speech that sheds light on a critical issue in our world today.

Subha’s talk highlights the fact that over 3 billion people worldwide are marginalized due to their language, leading to inequalities in education, employment, and more. As language professionals, we have a responsibility to amplify these voices and advocate for linguistic justice.

Linguistics Justice League is dedicated to promoting equitable access to language resources and education, and Subha’s talk aligns perfectly with our mission. We encourage all of our members and partners to watch this talk and join us in the fight for linguistic equity.

Let’s work together to create a world where every voice is heard and valued. Check out Subha’s TEDx talk now and join the movement for linguistic justice!

OneWorldNow - Give Big Campaign

Subha Vadlamannati, Our founder was humbled to be mentioned in the OneWorld Now!’s article! Linguistics Justice League resonates with OneWorld Now!’s mission promoting linguistic diversity and multilingualism as essential components of social justice. We believe that every individual has the right to express themselves in their native language, and that language should never be a barrier to accessing education, healthcare, or any other fundamental human right. We encourage everyone to contribute to OneWorld Now!’s #givebig campaign, so that more young people can benefit from their language and cultural immersion programs, and help build a more linguistically diverse and equitable world for all.

Casa Latina

LJL was at Domestic Workers Assembly event at Casa Latina!  We had a great time volunteering with kids. We played many games, Charades, Origami, Lingo-Bingo, Word Creation, Drawing etc.

LJL would love to help build any technology that Casa Latina needs to run the activities efficiently.

Linguistics Justice League Showcases Innovative EduLang App at NYLC Conference

Linguistics Justice League (LJL) made waves at the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) for Service-Learning Excellence Award conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where they were one of just five teams selected to attend with a full scholarship. Subha Vadlamannati, the founder of LJL, and Eshaan Barkataki, EduLang (a LJL product) co-chief technologist, presented their innovative project, EduLang, to an enthusiastic audience of government officials, organizational leaders, and strategic partners.

EduLang is a multilingual storytelling library app that translates kids’ books into a staggering 108 languages, and during the conference, Subha and Eshaan shared their plans for scaling the app’s Text to Speech and Speech to Text infrastructure across multiple languages to improve reading comprehension and writing skills. One of the app’s key inventions is a scanner that allows users to scan PDF pages. These pages are autotranslated by the app into 108 languages using a machine translation API. The team has big plans for the future, including partnering with organizations to source better content and adding live tutoring through volunteers who speak low-resource languages. They also aim to use the latest NLP technology to create content to translate into low resourced languages.

During their presentation, Subha and Eshaan highlighted the differences between EduLang and Google Translate. While Google Translate offers many languages, it doesn’t have all the dialects, and it replaces English text with the translated text. In contrast, EduLang preserves the English text while adding the new translated text, providing a seamless experience for multilingual learners. The app is geared towards beginner language learners of any age.

The conference offered a platform to witness and learn about the Bill of Rights and the inspirational leadership of women in America among many other key aspects. The conference was a rewarding experience for the attendees, who were inspired by the innovative ideas and inspiring stories shared. The LJL team left with a deeper understanding of the pressing issues faced by society today and the efforts being made to address them. They plan to bring this knowledge back to their local community to make a positive impact.

Overall, LJL’s presentation at the NYLC conference was an exciting moment for the team and a testament to their commitment to creating innovative solutions for language learners. With big plans for the future, the team is poised to make an even greater impact in the years to come.

March is Women's Month!

At Linguistics Justice League, we’re proud to highlight and celebrate the 👩‍🔬 incredible women who have made significant contributions to the field of linguistics, and especially those who have paved the way for a more diverse and inclusive future in the world of language and technology.

💡 Did you know that many of the most innovative and influential voices in computational linguistics are women? 👩‍💻 From Karen Spärck Jones, who developed the concept of inverse document frequency, to Cynthia Breazeal, who is revolutionizing human-robot interaction, these women have made significant contributions to the field. Other notable names include Emily Bender, who developed the HPSG framework, and Kathleen McKeown, whose work on text summarization and natural language generation has had a significant impact on the field. Regina Barzilay has also made significant contributions to the field, particularly in the areas of machine learning and computational biology. Let’s celebrate these brilliant women and the contributions they have made to the world of computational linguistics! 🎉

Linguistics Justice League recently presented the EduLang app to the Casa-Latina organization, which offers English Language Learning (ELL) classes to Spanish-speaking individuals. In an effort to enhance the learning experience for ELL students, the team added ten new bilingual books in Spanish and English to the EduLang app. This will provide students with a wider range of reading materials to improve their language skills.

In addition to expanding the content of the app, the Linguistics Justice League is also taking steps to improve its accessibility and security for all users. To achieve this, the team is updating their Android policies and switching to Typescript codebase. This change will not only ensure that the app is more secure, but also make it more user-friendly and accessible to a broader audience.

Overall, these updates to the EduLang app demonstrate the Linguistics Justice League’s commitment to providing the best possible learning experience for ELL students. With these improvements, the app will continue to be a valuable resource for Spanish-speaking individuals who are seeking to improve their English language skills.

Linguistics Justice League is proud to support two important initiatives aimed at fostering equity and opportunity for all students! We stand with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Agency, Region 9 and Washington State Superintendent Chris Reykdal in their vision of Dual Language for All by 2030.

Under this initiative, all students in Washington will have access to dual language education and the chance to become proficient in two or more languages. Multilingual/English learners and American Indian and Alaska Native students will be prioritized for at least half of the seats in dual language programs to ensure equity and prevent opportunity gaps.
At Linguistics Justice League, we understand the importance of linguistic diversity and the benefits it brings to individuals and society as a whole. We fully support the Sequential biliteracy model used by the Bethel School District Dual Language 50:50 Model and the Simultaneous biliteracy model used by Highline Public Schools Dual Language.

Let’s work together towards a more inclusive and multilingual future!

Please watch this video to findout how Highline Public Schools is implementing the dual language programs for elementary kids.

Many educators feel that ChatGPT can be misused by students, as students could be too dependent on it. Too much dependence on ChatGPT can kill students independent and creative thinking. Another problem is that students can rely on ChatGPT to generate content that they falsely attribute to themselves. Thus, they fall into copyright infringement and plagiarism. A third problem is that students could misuse data that they had collected from ChatGPT.

Meet Jovani, a dedicated React Native developer who has been making significant contributions over the past month. Jovani's hard work and expertise have been instrumental in ensuring that his team's project is on track and ready for the next phase. Jovani has been working diligently on UI and Redux integration, and his efforts have paid off. With the UI now functioning smoothly and Redux incorporated into the code, the team can now focus on other aspects of the project. Jovani's decision to use Redux was a smart one, as it is a more established and widely used technology with a large community behind it. His careful consideration of the potential issues that could arise with the use of Jotai was important. Jovani is also currently working on integrating Jotai and APIs to expand the functionality of the app. Although the only screen that is currently operational is the login screen, Jovani's work has been foundational in setting up the structure for future development. He has also restructured the authentication process to optimize its performance and reliability. Jovani's contributions to the project are invaluable. Thank you, Jovani, for your incredible work!

ChatGPT and Language Learning

Dr. Ali Farghaly

group, team, feedback-1825513.jpg

ChatGPT is an advanced artificial intelligence chatbot that has the capability of interacting with users and engaging with them in meaningful conversational dialogues. While most traditional search engines work well for basic navigational and information requests, they struggle with complex queries and fall short of interacting with users by explaining their responses or asking users for clarifications when they need them. Search engines do not know when they go wrong and thus cannot recognize nor admit their mistakes. In contrast, ChatGPT knows and acknowledges its mistakes and shortcomings. Furthermore, it can ask for clarifications when it needs more information to respond to a question. It can also reject inappropriate requests and explain why it is running short of expectations. ChatGPT can respond to follow up questions on a previous request. ChatGPT is also capable of learning from its interactions with users. It can remember conversations and use them to improve its responses in the future. It can also use natural language processing to understand the context of conversations and responds accordingly. This means that ChatGPT can become more intelligent over time which is a human characteristic, as it learns from its interactions with users. Additionally, ChatGPT can be used to provide personalized recommendations to users based on their past conversations. In short ChatGPT is more human-like than any search engine we have today.

Students learning a foreign or a second language can find ChatGPT very useful as they can make use of the range of benefits it offers. Even native language speakers can also find it very fruitful. ChatGPT provides an interactive platform for students to practice their skills around the clock. The following are some of the ways students can use ChatGPT in their journey to master the language they are studying:

1. ChatGPT is powered by artificial intelligence and as such can understand and respond to students’ input in their target language.

2. ChatGPT provides students with feedback on their language proficiency, allowing them to track their progress and identify areas for improvement.

3. Students can ask and get help with all aspects of language. For example, they can ask ChatGPT to explain grammatical points they are struggling with. They can also ask for several example sentences illustrating usage of a grammatical structure. ChatGPT can also help with improving vocabulary learning. It can provide definitions of words students do not know and their translations in the student’s native language. It can also show words in context by providing countless examples of actual usage.

4. ChatGPT can provide students practice exercises and can engage in meaning conversations with students.

ChatGPT is a great artificial intelligence application with very powerful natural language capabilities that is going to empower younger generations around the world. With all its amazing benefits, if misused, it can have a serious drawback on the minds of younger generations.

US Census Bureau

Multilingual Speakers are increasing

Did you know that the number of people in the US who speak a language other than English at home has nearly tripled in the past four decades? According to a recent report from the US Census Bureau, 22% of US residents (or 67.8 million people) now primarily use a language other than English at home, compared to just 10% (23.1 million) in 1980. While the number of English speakers has also grown, the growth has been much less significant. As the population of foreign language speakers grows, it’s likely that demand for improved language access will also increase.

We were ecstatic to publish our latest collection of Fadilah’s stories on EduLang. We are introducing this collection with great enthusiasm because the stories in it are deeply relatable to the refugee and immigrant community. These stories speak to the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of this population in a way that is authentic and meaningful. We believe that by sharing these stories, we can create a sense of connection and understanding among readers from all walks of life, and contribute to the celebration of diversity and inclusivity. We really appreciate Talal’s effort in validating the Arabic translation

Editorial

Dr. Ali Farghaly

We are blessed to live in the age of the Internet. It brought us several important perks our predecessors did not enjoy. The web has made knowledge freely accessible to almost anyone in the world who searches for it. Because of the web, all voices are now heard. It made the world a small village where people could get jobs and work from anywhere for any organization in the world. It ended, to a large extent, censoring of information. It allows everybody, who has the initiative, access to the best courses, best professors, academic and scientific papers, and excellent free tutorials to learn almost anything needed. It provides opportunities for remote working in the most advanced countries from anywhere in the world. It also provides opportunities for people to virtually cross their borders and network with peers and make new friends across the globe. No wonder then that people, especially young people, spend most of their time accessing the web.
tablet, internet, technology-5623396.jpg
Although the web empowers people especially in less developed countries and disadvantaged people in developed countries, the web brings serious problems that we should be aware of. One of the most serious problems results from the non-restrictive nature of the web. The web allows people to share their thoughts without censorship which resulted in the spread of false information, hate speech, bullying, pornographic and violent images, etc. Web users are very often bombarded with targeted advertising and spam which make them feel insecure and cause distractions. The web also allows anonymous posting so one can never be sure if people we chat with are really what they claim they are. The web allows people to create fake persona that are completely divorced from reality. This can be very harmful especially for young people. Web addiction has become very common. It wastes addictors time by taking them away from real life problems and objectives they need to focus on. Instead, they live in a virtual world that is divorced from reality.

Young people are especially vulnerable to the perils of the web. The smart thing for them to do is benefit from everything the web offers them without falling prey into the problems that come with it.

Zoom supports Sign Language Interpretation

LJL learned recently (Nov. 3 blog post) that Zoom added a new feature to make its video communication platform more accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing users by providing a specialized view for sign language interpreting on their meetings and webinars. The meeting host can arrange for a designated interpreter and participants can opt in to view the sign language interpreter in a separate viewing box.

Zoom introduced its live transcription and automatic translation features earlier this year and LJL applauds them for making these important accessibility enhancements to their offering!

We spent a numerous hours this month trying to get EduLang published in ios. We are super excited to let you all know that EduLang is now available in Apple app store!

We need your support by downloading EduLang on your iOS/android devices! Please share any feedback or questions you have with us!

Linguistics Justice League Challenge

Results!

Linguistics Justice League partnered with creAItivity to host an event to gather ideas that help bridge the gap between low and high-resource languages through Artificial Intelligence!

Special thanks to our sponsors: Taskade, Interview Cake and Balsamiq

Winning Team: Sanskriti Negi

Winner!

Sanskriti's Project Abstract - Oftentimes children of immigrants don’t know the language of the place they move to. In many places this leads to children not being able to perform as well in school, especially when no language-immersion classes are offered. Furthermore, even when language-immersion type classes are offered, they sometimes try to take out the native language of the student in hopes to fully assimilate them into a new culture.

Honorable Mentions

Team Cyber: Basil Friday Ovu, Janeth Oluebube Eni, Philip Oghenesuowho Ekiugbo

Paridhi Ramtani

Team Cyber's Abstract - Bajaphil is a gaming app that will teach basic concepts in low resource languages while combining visuals, audio and text through multi-scenario building. It will have Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa as its kick off languages while subsequently adding other widely spoken low resource languages of the world. The App will feature different game levels and rewards for completing each game level. There will be options for choosing different languages to learn and play from.
Paridhi's Project Abstract - Our idea includes building a platform that caters to the interests of a person. When we're interested in what we're learning, we pay closer attention; we process the information more efficiently. This app will help people learn English by focusing on topics that they like.

Thank you to our sponsors!

Interview with Dr. Ali, LJL board member!

We are excited to interview Dr. Ali,  one of our Board members for this month’s newsletter!

As part of the interview we asked multiple questions to know more about Dr.Ali's background and his interests and passions!
pyramids, egypt, egyptian-2371501.jpg
Background? Dr. Ali was born in Alexandria, Egypt and got my bachelor degree from the University of Alexandria.
translation, holidays, visit-4620781.jpg
Interest in Linguistics? After getting my BA Dr. Ali worked as a teacher of English as a foreign language. Through my teaching of English, he realized the relevance of many areas of Linguistics to the teaching of foreign and second languages. For example, the distinction between first language acquisition and second language learning, Contrastive Linguistics, first language interference etc are only a few areas that are extremely important in second language learning.
welcome, words, greeting-905562.jpg
Any Language barriers? Dr. Ali faced language barriers problems when he went to the United Kingdom for graduate work. He found out that people in England spoke differently from what he learned at school. He did not know how to do the small talk which barred him from socializing with native British. He had to overcome subject matter difficulties, like any native, and also the linguistic barrier. Dr. Ali encountered this also when he moved to the US.
Number of languages? Dr. Ali is a native speaker of Egyptian Arabic and also studied English, French, German and Latin.
Why volunteer at LJL? LJL has a noble cause which is empowering people from linguistic minorities and enabling them advance academically, socially and professionally. That is what excited Dr. Ali about LJL

Dr. Ali, LJL is honored to have you as our board member!
